Donald A. Birkhofer, 82, Wilton, died Monday, March 20, 2006, at Simpson Memorial Home, West Liberty.
The Rev. Bruce Giese will officiate. Musical selections will be provided by organist Sharon Bowers, and vocalist Henry Bentley. Casket bearers are Steve Owens, Robert Kirkman, Kevin Drake, Jeff Firch, Tony Firch, Gregg Thurston, Brad Thurston and Vance Thurston. Honorary casket bearers are Charlie Lilienthal and Merlin Rosfjord. Burial will be at Oakdale Cemetery, Wilton, with military honors provided by Wilton American Legion Post 584.
Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church or the Wilton First Responders

Mr. Birkhofer was born Aug. 3, 1923, in Moscow, the son of Arthur and Helen Zesiger Birkhofer. He married Donna R. Thurston on June 30, 1946, in Wilton.
He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He retired in 1983 from the Rock Island Arsenal after 20 years of service.
He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and he enjoyed bowling, fishing and gardening. He also enjoyed going to the Old Thresher's Reunion and the Muscatine County Fair in West Liberty. He was a 60-year member of Wilton American Legion Post 584 and a retired Wilton volunteer fireman. He was listed in the Hall of Patriots at the Rock Island Arsenal and received a certificate of appreciation from the French government for his part in the Liberation of France during World War II.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Dean Birkhofer; a sister, Arlene "Tootie" Brus; and a grandson, Scott Owens.
