Samuel set out on a hunting trip on 27th October 1958 and became separated from his hunting companion. The search area was rugged, and despite even members of the National Guard being called in, he was not able to be located.
On 13th July 1959, investigators from Powell and Missoula Counties located what appeared to be a temporary campsite containing some torn clothing, a hunting knife, boots, and a broken high-powered rifle. Nearby was a bear's foraging area, where bits of bone and hair were recovered.
It was theorized that Samuel shot and wounded a bear, which then charged him and wounded him in return. Samuel made a temporary camp a few hundred yards away from the initial attack site and fired his remaining two shells in an attempt to summon help. The bear apparently returned to the campsite and attacked Samuel, who fought for his life but was killed and devoured by the bear.
