James M. Walker was killed 9 Aug 1863. It was the same day two of his neighbors, William Maloy Bunch and his brother John Carr Bunch were killed. It is not clear whether they were killed by Jay Hawkers or Bushwackers. However, their deaths occurred just before General Order 11 withdrawing civilians from the border counties in August 1863. It was just before the 21 Aug 1863 Missouri raid on Lawrence, Kansas. It is possible that they were being recruited to participate in the Lawrence attack, and when they declined were shot in their own fields.

James' mother, Catherine Shepherd Walker, in her November 1861 will, identifies Flora Sarena Walker Schaffter as the daughter of my son James Walker. In the same document she also identifies Henry Alexander Denny as the son of my daughter Hannah Walker Denny. Sarena's death certificate also identifies James Walker and Elizabeth as her parents.

Hannah Walker's husband, Henry Denney, and James Walker's widow, Elizabeth Conner married . They went on to have four children attributed to the marriage.

However, one of those children called David William Denney was born 12 Jul 1863, while Henry Denney was a widow. His wife Hannah died in 1861. Elizabeth Conner Walker could have been his mother. But, she was married to James Walker at the time of David's conception and birth. Catherine Walker does not mention David in her will. David's death certificate identifies Henry Denney and Elizabeth Conner as his parents.
