A funeral for Melvin D. "Mel" Holland of Perrydale will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Macy & Son Funeral Directors, McMinnville, with the Rev. Charles Borho officiating.

Interment will be in St. James Catholic Cemetery, McMinnville.

The funeral home will be open for visitation from 2 to 7 p.m. today.

Mr. Holland died May 15, 2001, in Legacy Emanuel Hospital, Portland, from complications of head injuries suffered in a fall at home. He was 88.

He was born June 6, 1912, in St. Johns, the son of John and Phoebe Wilson Holland. He moved in 1914 to McMinnville, where he was raised and educated.

He and Alice McCune were married Oct. 16, 1935, in Stevenson, Wash.

In 1938, he and Charlie Krieger opened and operated the Holland-Krieger Grocery Store in Dayton. He worked for Rand Truck Line, later named Risberg's Truck Line, from 1941 to 1946. He worked for Franz Bakery from 1946 to 1974, then retired.

He was preceded in death by his first wife in 1991.

He later married Easter Pedranti McKee and moved to Perrydale.

Mr. Holland had been a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks 1283, McMinnville, since 1937 and the McMinnville Fire Department since 1959. He enjoyed travel, woodworking, playing cards and visiting Spirit Mountain Casino.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Jim Holland of McMinnville; three daughters, Sharon Wasson of McMinnville, Diane Beck of Lafayette and Joanne Mau of Minnesota; a stepson, Bill McKee of Perrydale; seven grandchildren, four stepgrandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, five step-great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

He also was preceded in death by four sisters and three brothers.
