Augustus "Gus" Boyd was born in Jasper County, Georgia, in 1825 and came to Alabama with his parents about 1836. He attended local schools and grew to manhood at Boyds Tank. On October 7, 1846 he married Elizabeth W. Carlisle (born 1830) of Georgia and established a home on Boyd lands adjoining the home place. Several descendants of Gus Boyd report that he was "the strong man" in the Boyd family. His feats of strength are legendary. An old photograph indicates such a manly physique. One story is that Gus came upon four neighborhood boys with a loaded wagon that had lost a wheel. The four boys could not lift the wagon to set the wheel aright. Gus pushed them aside, lifted the wagon and ordered the boys to put the wheel in place.
Another tale relates to Gus' Civil War experiences. He took temporary leave from his company to visit his family and on his return to the war front was given a choice of punishment for his escapade. Gus said "just anything except splitting rails." He was promptly assigned to the rail splitting detail. Presumably rails were used to build breastworks between the Rebel and Yankee lines. The rail fence was an ideal rest for the heavy, long barrell, muzzle loading rifles then in common use.

1. Paralee Boyd, born 1849, married in Alabama and moved to Georgia.
2. Martha Boyd, born 1851, married Thomas D. Robinson and moved to Titus County, Texas. Buried Nevill's Chapel Cemetery.
3. Jimmie Ann Boyd, (1853-1941), married Thomas Jefferson Lewis. Migrated to Plano, Texas, in 1895 and spent their last years with daughter Mamie Goodloe. Buried in Plano Cemetery.
4. Elizabeth Boyd, born 1854, married John Henry Combs. Migrated to Titus County, Texas. Buried in Nevill's Chapel Churchyard.
5. Augustus A. Boyd, Jr., born 1856.
6. Thomas Jefferson Boyd, (1858-1940), married Nancy Lewis. Migrated to Titus County, Texas. Buried at Old Union Cemetery.
7. Permelia "Melia" Boyd, born 1860, married Lemuel O. Adams. Migrated to Titus County, Texas and both buried in Nevill's Chapel Cemetery. (Note: Burial place incorrect - buried at Damascus Cemetery, Titus County, Texas.)
