Smitty was born January 12, 1919 in Mason County Texas, a son of Felix H and Gertrude Teague Schmidt. He attended school in Coleman and served in the 9th Air Force in the European Theater of Operations during World War II.
He married Mary Allen Hardy on February 1, 1940 In Santa Anna. She preceded him in death on February 28, 1980. He later married Mozeile Brister Stewart on June 26 1983 in Coleman. She preceded him in death on November 17, 2000.
He owned and operated a laundry and dry cleaning business in Coleman and was a distributor for the Abilene ' Reporter-News. He was a loving father and grandfather and a member of the First Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law Don Sterling and Beverly Schmidt of Dallas, one daughter and son-in-law Mary Ann and Kenny Fairchild of Abilene, one brother and sister-in-law Felix H and Betty Schmidt of San Angelo, two brothers-in-law, CQ Billings of Abilene, BR Gibbs of Natchez Mississippi, four stepchildren Ann Ogles of Wichita Falls, Adna Clevenger of Conroe, Ronald Stewart of Coleman, Willie Stewart of Conroe, four grandchildren Cody Reams and Cristy Reams both of Abilene, Ashlyn Schmidt and Justin Schmidt both of Dallas, seven step grandchildren several great-grandchildren and several cousins nieces and nephew including Richard Schmidt and Tony Schmidt both of San Angelo.
