John W. Chaney was born in Coshocton County, Ohio the son of Samuel and Eleanor "Ellen" Moore Chaney. He married Susanna Howell 17 Jun 1860 in Coshocton County. In 1880, John and Susanna moved to Clearwater, Kalkaska County, Michigan. They were the parents of seven children:
