Charles Ezra Cornell held both public and private positions. He served in the US Treasury Department and was a member of the New York delegation to the 1880 National Convention. He was a life member of the Cornell University Board of Trustees. In business he was the president of Cornell Transfer and the Union Transfer Companies. Mr. Cornell was also a member of fraternal organizations, including, Alpha Tau Omega and the Royal Arcanum. He was also a member of the Cornell Free Library and served as its president for many years, the Town and Gown Club and the State Agricultural Society. Politically, Mr. Cornell was a Republican. He was also a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Ithaca.
The Cornell family lived at 512 Highland Road in Ithaca for 35 years, on land that was originally part of the Cornell farm. Due to ill health, in 1945 Mr. and Mrs. Cornell went to live with their son in New Jersey, where Charles Ezra Cornell died on 29 Jan 1947. He was predeceased by his wife, who died on 17 March 1946. Mr. Cornell was survived by his son, William Bouck Cornell, and his grandson, William Ezra Cornell.
