The son of John and Mary Fagan was wed to Hannah Madison Simpson Fagan, who lived from 1832 to 1913. Just before the Civil War, he moved to Luray, where he became a highly respected citizen. He was a marble cutter and carved many of the headstones in Green Hill Cemetery. He took part in the John Brown Raid at Harper's Ferry as part of Morgan's Continentals. Daniel then served as First Lieutenant in Company K of the 10th Regiment of Virginia Infantry. He enlisted June 2, 1861 at Luray and was wounded at the Battle of First Manassas. After the War he was Mayor of Luray.
