GOOD LIFE ENDED
Samuel Lamont Passes Away at a Generous Age
Samuel Lamont died at the family residence in this city at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon after an illness of less than a week. The end came as peascefully and quietly as he had passes his long and useful life, and he now goes to the grave full of years, with the profound respect and love and tender regard of all who knew him. He was in every sense an honest, upright and sincere man, living an unspotted life, in strict accord with the rule which should guide all human actions, "Do unto others as you would others would do unto you."
Mr. Lamont was born at Minne Gaff, Scotland, Feb. 12, 1818. His parents were poor, and seeing no opportunity to better his condition in his native land he, with his young wife, came to the United States in 1844 after a six weeks' voyage. Landing in New Your City he went up the Hudson to Albany and there took the canal to Buffalo, the canal trip lasting a full week. He found employment as a gardner at Silver Creek, near Buffalo. Here he remained four years, but being determined to own a farm of his own he, with his wife and children, came up the lakes to Milwaukee and from there went to the Scotch settlement in Verona, where he entered government land, building a house from logs cu in the woods. That he might earn a little money while waiting for his crops to grow, he sought employment in Madison, and in the summer of 1849 grubbed the land now occupied by the home of the widow of the late Lafayette Kellogg, corner of State and West Dayton Streets, which was then in a state of nature. The market for his crops was Mineral Point and Milwaukee, to which latter place he made trips with oxen, and, to help out the expenses of the ten days' journey, be bought salt and sold it to the Madison People at $2 a barrel. In 1882 he sold his farm which he had made from the wilderness, and moved to this city to spend the remainder of his days. His good and faithful wif, who had labored with him in his early struggles and hardships, died in 1885. Four children survive him John Lamont, formaly a prominent real estate dealer of Madison, but now of Portland, Oregon; Robert Lamont, a prominent business man of Aurora, Neb; Mrs Sarah Craik of Iowa, and the much respected Miss Isabel Lamont of this city. The memory of this rare gem, quietly and unostentatiously working out his destiny in the path of right and justice, will be long cherished by all who knew him, and we tender to those of his family who survive him, our sincere sympathy for their loss. The funeral will take place from the family residence, 1140 East Dayton Street, at 10:00 Friday morning. Rev. B.B. Bigler officiating. The interment will be made at Verona.
