Leonard Eugene Bragg, 77, of Salem, went home to his Heavenly Father on January 28, 2012 surrounded by the love of his family. He was born October 6, 1934 in Hinton, W.Va. and spent most of his early years in Pulaski. Preceding him in death are his mother, Catherine Viars, and one brother, Orville Bragg. Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 58 years, Nancy Bragg; and their three daughters and spouses, Kathy and Gary Williams, of Salem, Sandra and Chris Whisnant, of Salem, and Pam and Allan Malina of Appomattox. He is blessed with six grandchildren, Amy and Jordan Mau, Ashley Whisnant and Brian Whisnant, Noah Malina, Nathan Malina, and Caleb Malina. He was ecstatic to experience the addition of two great-grandchildren, Savannah Mau and Waylon Mau. Survivors also include his sister, Wanda (Gene) Breeding; and his brother, George Bolen (Gracie); one uncle, James Grimmett. His family was very special to him, including his brothers and sisters-in-law. He was also blessed with many nieces and nephews.
Leonard loved music, especially bluegrass gospel. He played guitar, mandolin, fiddle, and upright bass with several bands throughout the Roanoke Valley and even began piano lessons at the age of 60. He was a long time member of the Fiddle and Banjo Club. He and his wife, Nancy, sang with Chi-Chi and Eric Gabbert as the New Dawn Quartet for 11 years. After retiring from Semco Manufacturing, he enjoyed his retirement by traveling, playing his music, and spoiling his grandchildren.
The family wishes to thank Gentle Shepherd Hospice for their love and excellent care during his illness. Special thanks goes to Marcia Troyer, RN and Pam Hinkle, CNA. They also appreciate the love and support of their many friends during this difficult time. The Celebration of Life service will be held at Oakey's North Chapel at noon on Tuesday, January 31, 2012 with Mr. Allan Malina and the Rev. Gary Kingery officiating. The interment service will be held 3 p.m. on Tuesday at the Beaver Creek Church of the Brethren Cemetery in Floyd Co. Donations in his memory may be made to Gentle Shepherd Hospice. The family will be receiving friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday January 30, 2012, at Oakey's North Chapel. Arrangements by Oakey's North Chapel, Roanoke.
