Born with the family name Schwartz and baptized in Homburg, Bavaria (today in the Saarland). The sponsors at her baptism were Sebastian Georg and Louisa Ruff. Louisa came to America in 1842 and married Frederick Overkercher. She gave birth to 6 children: 3 boys and 3 girls. The boys and two girls died before she did.
With her husband she established the Smale Family Farm that is today on Rt. 534 (Scenic Dr.) between Kresgeville and Jonas, PA.
