Frederick established the Smale Family Farm that is today on Rt. 534 (Scenic Dr.) between Kresgeville and Jonas, PA.
In 1841 he divided 239 acres with Ludwig Schwitzgebel (his cousin) and John Schwartz, which they had purchased together at a cost of $0.50/acre.
