James moved with his family to Cedar Rapids, Iowa from Pennsylvania where he was born. There he enlisted in Company H, 2nd Iowa Cavalry on February 3, 1864. He was discharged September 19, 1865.
He married Anna McGranahan on March 7, 1867 and they had seven children: Samuel Walter, Robert Lewis, Arthur Hutchinson Holden, Harrison Daniel, Eva Jane, Ethel Vivian and James Thomas.
Before coming to Boone County, Nebraska in 1898 they lived in Ashland, Sarpy County. Later Mr. and Mrs. Arbuthnot moved to Marsland, Nebraska where James died.
