Arthur Arbuthnot, son of James and Anna Arbuthnot, was born at Cedar Rapids, Ia., Jan. 17, 1880, and passed away at the Veterans hospital in Grand Island, Nebr., at 3:40 a.m., Oct. 8, 1952, at the age of 72 years, 8 mos. 21 days.
He was baptized when a few months old, came to Nebraska with his parents when he was a small boy and resided for a number of years in Sarpy county. It was then he became a member of the Presbyterian church. He later transferred membership to First Methodist church in Albion, Nebr.
The family moved to Boone county in 1898, where he continued to reside except during his military service.
On Jan. 6, 1909, he was united in marriage to Addie May Smith at Cedar Rapids, Nebr. To this union two children were born: Tracy L., now residing in Seattle, Wash., and Eva Jane, who passed away at the age of 11 months. In August 1916, is wife, Addie, passed away.
He was in the service of his country during World War I. He was honorable discharged onJune 6, 1919, at Fort Russel, Wyo.
On July 29, 1924, he and Helen Marie Gilmer of Albion were united in marriage at the Methodist church in O'Neil, Nebr. To this union two daughters were born: Elizabeth Ann and Caroline Joan.
He was a kind and loving husband, a devoted father and a true friend to all he knew, and always willing to help those in need.
He was Boone County sheriff from 1923 to 1927. He was a member of Dan Cox Post 44 of the American Legion of Cedar Rapids.
Survivors are: his wife, Helen, who has faithfully cared for him during all these years of his illness; daughters, Elizabeth Ann and Carolyn Joan; a son, Tracy, of Seattle, Wash.; three grandchildren; a sister Ethel, and a brother, James, of Marsland, Nebr., a number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
A military funeral was held at the First Methodist church at Albion on Saturday, Oct. 11, 1952, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Nichard Dinsdale conducting the service.
The pallbearers were: James J. Gordon, Paul Hunt and Alfred Rutten, of Cedar Rapids; Luther Haas, Marvin Richards and Ralph Reid of Albion.
Burial was made in Rose Hill Cemetery with full military honors.
