Marshall was the son of William Joseph Eckford b 1833 AL, and Isabella Ann Rose Gates b 1833 GA. He was the president of the Atlanta Carriage and Hardware Company on Alabama St. in Atlanta. He married Sallie Adair 1 Nov 1893 in Atlanta. They had three children:

1. Marshall Thomas Eckford Jr. b 1895
2. George Adair Eckford b 1897
3. Erroll Eckford b 1901
