Daughter of Charles Rush Gates and Rose Reid. Wife of William J Eckford, married 5 Jan 1854 in Monroe, Mississippi. He attended Princeton (1850 census). They were the parents of Charles, William, Thomas, and James. William (Belle's husband) was a Captain, Wayne County Rifles, Thirteenth Mississippi Infantry, in the Civil War, and was killed in 1862 at Malvern Hill.

Mrs. Belle Gates Eckford, 92, widow of the late Captain William Joseph Eckford, died Thursday afternoon at the residence, 267 East North avenue. She was born in Green county, Alabama, April 18, 1833, and married Captain Eckford in January, 1854. Moving to Atlanta in 1870, she had resided in the city ever since. She was a member of the Central Presbyterian church.
Mrs. Eckford is survived by three sons, W. H. and M. T. Eckford, of Altanta, and J. J. Eckford, of Dallas, Texas; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 4:30 o'clock this afternoon from the chapel of H. M. Patterson & Son, Rev. Ben R. Lacy officiating, Interment will be in Oakland cemetery.
