Marilla Jane Sappenfield was born December 9, 1826, near Brymville, Ind. She was married to Nathan Deweese on November 19, 1844. Mr. Deweese was a soldier in the Civil war and died on July 20, 1865. She brought her family to Kansas in 1867, living in Pottawatomie county for two years, and later settling on a homestead on West Creek, in Lincoln township, Republic county. A few years later she sold her homestead and went to live with her children. The last three years of her life, with the exception of six months, were spent in the home of her oldest daughter Mrs. S. W. Clark, of Hollis. Kans., where she died of infirmities due to old age on August 4th, at the age of 92 years, 7 months and 26 days. She was the mother of seven children, four of whom have'> preceded her in death. The living children are Mrs. S. W. Clark of Hollis, Kan., Lewis Deweese of North Bend, Ore. and Mrs. J A. Nutter of Los Angeles Calif. She had 25 grandchildren. 48 great grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren, making a total of 92 decedents. 82 of whom are living. She was for many years a. member of the M. E- church. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Little of Hollis., at the S. W. Clark home on Monday. August 5th, and the body was laid to rest in Zion Cemetery beside her oldest son, who died a little over a year ago. - Munden Press
