Joseph A. Deweese was born Jan. 3, 1848 in Harrison County, Indiana and departed this life May 21, 1917 at his home in Lincoln Township, Republic County, Kansas, aged 69 years, 4 mos. and 18 days.
He was married Sept. 25, 1866 to Rachel Sherwood of Harrison Co., Ind.
They came to Manhattan, Kans. October 15, 1866 after living in Pottowatomie (sic) County for two years they came to Republic County and homesteaded on West Creek.
He was Post Master of the West Creek Post Office for a term of eight years and was also Township Trustee for a number of years.
He leaves to mourn his departure a wife and four children, Wesley A. Deweese, Nellie Elsie Deweese, Mrs. Marilla Downey of Burlington and Harrison E. Deweese, also one brother, Lewis Deweese of Marchfield, Ore., and two sisters, Mrs. Mary M. Clark, Hollis and Mrs. Laura Nutter of Los Angeles.
Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at the Minersville Church conducted by Rev. Carpenter of Hollis. The interment was at the Smock Cemetery.
