MISSOULA - Olive M. Hovdey, 91, of Missoula passed away Sunday, Aug. 19, 2007, at St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula, with her family present, following a brief illness.

Olive was born the first child of Clarence and Anna Rich Nov. 29, 1915, at their homestead in Dean, in Stillwater County. She attended schools there, graduating from Columbus High School in 1933.

In 1935, she enrolled at Montana State College in Bozeman. Her college summers were spent working in Yellowstone Park, memories of which she cherished her entire life.

After college she moved to Billings for employment, where she met and married Fred O. Hovdey in November of 1938. Within two years of their marriage they moved to Seattle, arriving just as America was drawn into World War II. They worked in the war effort at the shipyards and Boeing.

They then started their family. Four sons, Carl, Paul, Dale and Dean were born in Seattle, before their Montana heritage drew them back home.

In 1952, they returned to the Stillwater Valley where their fifth son, John, was born. During the 10 years the Hovdeys lived there, Olive worked several years as the city clerk and treasurer of Columbus. She also volunteered her time as a mother adviser for the Rainbow Girls and a den mother of the Cub Scouts.

In 1962, Olive and her family moved to Missoula for better educational opportunities for her boys. Her working career in Missoula consisted of medical receptionist and office manager at hospitals and clinics. She retired from Community Hospital.

Some of Olive's greatest joys came from her involvement in the Eastern Star most of her adult life. In Missoula, she went through the chairs of office and was honored as Worthy Matron in 1969. She also served the Rock Rose, Electa and Emmanuel Chapters of Eastern Star as organist for over 40 years, playing well into her 70s. She and Fred were longtime members of Atonement Lutheran Church.

In addition to being a working mom, Olive was also a wonderful homemaker. She was a talented seamstress and made many wedding dresses. She crocheted countless baby booties and hats, doilies, and tablecloths, beautiful works of art. Olive loved to host big holiday dinner parties for university students who could not get home. Another of Olive's talents was that of the family historian and could trace her families' ancestry for many generations.

Olive was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Fred; her son, John; her daughter-in-law, Sarena; and her brother, C. B. Rich.

She is survived by her four sons, their wives, and children: Carl of San Francisco, Calif.; Paul, Wendy and Ryan of Boise, Idaho; Dale, Chris and Sarah of Missoula; Dean, Patty, Eric and Anna of McCall, Idaho; grandsons Gabe Hovdey of Austin, Texas, and Dan Hovdey (Sierra) of Eugene, Ore. She is also survived by two sisters, Margaret Monk of Missoula and Susan Russell (Herb) of Nye.

A life celebration service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, 2007, at Atonement Lutheran Church, followed by a reception at the church. Pastor Mitchell Jones will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date at Sunset Memorial Cemetery. Memorials have been suggested to Meals on Wheels, Ani-Meals, the Atonement Lutheran Church, or a charity of the donor's choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of Garden City Funeral Home and Crematory.
