The Rev. George Stewart Batzel, 76, of Tatesville, Everett Rt. 2, widely known as a minister of the Church of the Brethren for 42 years, died Thursday evening, Nov. 22, in Bedford County Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness.

The Rev. Mr. Batzel entered the ministry in 1907 and was ordained by the laying on of hands in 1921 by the Rev. Ira Hopsopple and the Rev. David Detwiler. During his ministry, he represented his congregation about 12 times at District meetings, and in recent years was a successful evangelist, participating in more than 50 revivals.

He baptized more than 350 persons, married over 30 couples and preached at some 200 funerals. In recent years he has been in semiretirement.

Rev. Batzel spent 11 years as custodian of Morrison's Cove Home for the Aged, Martinsburg, and three years as custodian of the Forney Memorial Home, Boonesboro, MD. He also served as minister in Beaver Creek, MD, for three years and Smithfield, five years.

The eighth child-and a twin-he was born near Yellow Creek, April 17, 1875, the son of the late John and Kathryn Burket Batzel, and was the last member of his immediate family. Reared on a farm, he had the benefit of a common school education. On May 25, 1899, he married Mary E. Knisely, daughter of George and Susan Knisely, who survives. He was united with the Bethel Congregation of the Church of the Brethren in 1893, and in 1903, the Yellow Creek Church of the Brethren called him to the Deacon's Office. At an early age, he was appointed Sunday School supervisor, a position he held until his entry into the ministry. He was an Elder of the Church for about 20 years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by these children: Mrs. Jesse Brallier, Mrs. George Greenawalt and John E. Batzel, all of Everett Rt. 2; Clifford Batzel, St. Louis, MO, and Joe Fred (Buddy) Batzel, Miami, FL. Two children, Floyd R. and Mary Alice, preceded him in death.

Also surviving are 28 grandchildren, a brother-in-law, Aaron Ritchey, Rossville, Ind., and a sister-in-law, Mrs. John B. Batzel, Everett Rt. 2, and a number of nephews and nieces.

Funeral services were held in the Bethel Church of the Brethren, Everett Rt. 2, with the Rev. Joseph Clapper, the Rev. E. M. Detwiler, D. D. and the Rev. Horace Clapper, officiating. Interment was in the Bethel Church Cemetery.
Stewart Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Rev. Batzel was a retired minister of the Church of the Brethren. He was 76.
He was graduated from Juniata College. He served as superintendent of the San Mar Home of Aged at Boonesboro, MD, and the Home for the Aged at Martinsburg, PA.
He was pastor of the Bethel congregation in Yellow Creek, Bedford County, until his retirement about 1950. He served as supply pastor in Bedford County churches until 6 weeks before his passing.
