John W. Durham Died Wednesday
Long Time Resident of the County Succumbs After Long Illness
Rites at Windfall

John Wesley Durham, for many years a resident of this county, died at his home, 814 Main street, Elwood, shortly after midnight Tuesday, death ending an illness which started 14 years ago, when he met with an accident on the John N. Hoban farm, northeast of Tipton. Mr. Durham was assisting in making hay when a pulley broke and a piece flew, striking him in the forehead and causing a bone injury which never healed. Since that time he had spent much time in hospitals, undergoing a number of operations for the removal of diseased bone and for draining accumulated pus from the injury. For the past several months his condition had been much worse and the poison from the wound had entered his system.

Funeral services are to be held at the Windfall Christian church Thursday afternoon, with Rev. Polly (Couch) Bowman of Hemlock, officiating, and interment will be in the Windfall cemetery.

The deceased was a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Durham, for many years residents of the Hazel Dell community, where he grew to manhood and where he was born 78 years ago. He had been a farmer all of his life up to the time of his injury, and was a member of the Hazel Dell Friends church.

Sept. 21, 1884*, the deceased was united in marriage to Miss Mary E. Berry, daughter of George W. and Lucy (Warner) Berry, and for a number of years they resided in the Hazel Dell and Windfall communities. A number of years ago after their children were grown, difficulties arose and the couple separated, the former wife at this time residing in Windfall.

His second marriage was to Susan (Graf) Smith, and they have resided in Elwood for the past several years. Surviving with the widow are five children, Mrs. Bertha Coleman, wife of Elmer Coleman of New Castle; David Durham of Elwood; William Durham of Fortville, and Jay Durham and Mrs. Roy Fisher of Windfall. Twelve grandchildren also survive.

He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Mary Collier of Sheridan, and Mrs. Luella Webb of Windfall, and three brothers, William Durham of Atlanta, Elisha Durham of Greentown, and Ellsworth Durham of Prairie township.

The body will lie in state at the home in Elwood until taken to the church for services, and friends may call at any time.
