He enlisted March 22, 1862 in Choctaw Co., Alabama as a private in 3rd Corp., Co. D, 40th Alabama Inf. Reg. He fought at the Battle of Vicksburg and was captured on July 4, 1863 and later exchanged for Union prisoners. He was captured again at the Battle of Lookout Mountain on 24 November 1863. He was incarcerated at the Rock Island Prison Barracks until 20 and 21 March, 1865 when he was transferred to Point Lookout, Maryland, and exchanged again for captured Union soldiers.

He married Martha Martin in 1863 and lived in Choctaw County, Alabama. They had 8 children born before 1878. He then moved his family to Port Sullivan, Milam County, Texas before 1880. After Martha died in 1893, he moved to Van Zandt County, Texas and there married a widow, Mary Susanna Isabella BARBER SHINN on April 30, 1896. After one child, they divorced in December 1898 and he married a third time in December 1899 to Fannie Blackwelder and had two more children. He was admitted to the State Hospital in Austin, Travis County on 22 Sep 1903.

Austin State Hospital provided the following information about William Riley Vincent/Vinson: He is listed as W. R. Vinson. He arrived here on 22 Sep 1903 and died 12 Oct 1906; he is buried in our cemetery. The only problem is, we don't know the grave location.
