Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 27, 2012 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Sauk Rapids for Jerome "Jerry" F. Schimnich, age 81, who passed away Tuesday at his home. Rev. Ronald Weyrens will officiate and burial will be at Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery near Little Falls. St. Cloud East Side VFW Post 4847 will pray at 5:30 p.m., followed by Sauk Rapids American Legion Post 254 at 6:00 p.m., Knights of Columbus Council 11346 of Sauk Rapids, Sacred Heart Men's Club and Catholic Aid Council at 6:30 p.m., and parish prayers at 7:00 p.m. all Thursday at the funeral home.

Jerry was born Dec. 25, 1930 in St. Cloud to Frank & Mary (Trobec) Schimnich. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Jerry married Joan Winczewski on Sept. 3, 1962 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Sartell. He was a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 35 years, retiring Nov. 1, 1988. He also worked for Sauk Rapids Hardware & Furniture for 2 years and Andy's Standard Service for 1 year. After his retirement, Jerry drove motor coach and school bus for Trobec's Bus Service for 10 years and for Larson Bus Service for 3 years. He also sold Watkins Products since 1980. He was the founder of two polka bands, the Merry Makers and the Jolly Bohemians and also played with the Stan Brenny Polka Band. Jerry was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 11346 of Sauk Rapids, Sacred Heart Men's Club, Catholic Aid Council and served as an usher for 45 years. He was also a member of Sauk Rapids American Legion Post 254, St. Cloud East Side VFW Post 4847, Mended Hearts Chapter 10 of St. Cloud, former president and member of Stearns County Pioneer Club, and a former member of the St. Cloud Musicians Union. Jerry was very passionate about polka music, playing at many area nursing homes and also on WVAL Radio Station. He owned and operated Jerry's Record Shop since 1964. Jerry enjoyed his cabin, collecting buckles, recording polka music and Molly B television show. He had special place in his heart for his dog, Tinker.

Survivors include his wife, Joan of Sauk Rapids; son, John (Carol) of Popple Creek; sister, Annella Servatious of Melrose; and three grandchildren, Joey, Emily and Heidi. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Phillip.
