Longtime Amity and Sheridan community volunteer Irene C. Panek died Oct. 30, 2001, in Providence Medical Center, Everett, Wash. She was 93.

Private interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Park, McMinnville.

Born Chiona Irene Crawley on Dec. 2, 1907 in Exeter, Neb., she was the daughter of Elma and Ivan Crawley. She spent her childhood on a farm and moved to Oregon with her family in 1922. As a young woman, she lived and worked in the Portland and Dayton areas.

She and Joseph Panek were married Sept. 19, 1935.

The couple lived on a farm near Amity for 25 years. Mr. Panek died Jan. 21, 1960.

Mrs. Panek worked in a variety of jobs. She worked for the government, inspecting grain and seed for foreign export. She also worked at Columbia Food and Erickson's Market in McMinnville.

She later was a baker at the Marion Hotel, Salem, and during her career she baked thousands of pies and pastries for conventions and hotel guests. She loved catering parties and weddings and she was known for creating beautiful wedding cakes.

In addition to her career, Mrs. Panek dedicated much of her life to community service. Family members said, "Irene would always say, 'If you're going to live in a community, be a part of it or don't be there.'" During her time as a resident of Amity and, later, Sheridan, Mrs. Panek contributed generously to the life of each community.

In 1957, she helped start the Amity Valley Women's Club, which established the Annual Amity Hotcake Breakfast. For the past 44 years, proceeds from the event have funded high school scholarships and helped with special projects, such as the purchase of the Amity City Library and equipment for the Amity Fire Department. She participated in the breakfasts for many years, even after moving from Amity.

In 1971, the American Business Women's Association, Salem Chapter, named Mrs. Panek its Woman of the Year. The same year, she became a member of the Sheridan Chamber of Commerce, which named her its Woman of the Year in 1972.

During her four-year term on the Sheridan City Council, she was chairperson for the city library and park, started the city's annual chicken barbecue and was head cook for the Loaves and Fishes Kitchen for senior citizens. She was grand marshal of the Sheridan Days Parade in 1981. She also belonged to the Neighbors of Woodcraft Lodge for more than 50 years.

Survivors include a son, Richard Panek of Portland; a daughter, Barbara Panek of Stanwood, Wash.; a sister, Audrey Panek of Vancouver, Wash.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Amity Valley Women's Club for The Irene Panek Memorial in care of First Federal Savings and Loan, PO Box 125, Amity, OR 97101.
