---------------
From Queen City Mail newspaper:
John A. Pratt, was a native of Berkshire Co., Ma and was a captain in the state militia of Vermont and also served as a member of the Vermont legislature for 3 terms.
----------------
John Aldrich Pratt was born in Clarksburg, Berkshire Co., Ma to Ebenezer and Sarah/Sally (Aldrich) Pratt. His mother's grave is yet to be found nor that of his stepmother, Lydia Aldrich Pratt.
The family moved to Stamford,Bennington Co., Vermont where he served in the Vermont Legislature for 3 terms.
He came to Wauconda in 1854 by covered wagon with 25 people including his wife & children & father, Ebenezer.
From my FTM notes:
"1854: 1. John and Lydia (Webster) Pratt came to Wauconda from Stamford, Vermont, with 19 others. They bought land from Justus Bangs who had asked him to come to Wauconda.
They would then take on the hotel Bangs had built, which came to be known as the Pratt House. Many civic functions, such as elections (see 1877), were held at the Pratt House."
1877
"4. 18 September Election held at Pratt House to elect trustees for the Village of Wauconda. Robert Harrison (44 votes), Daniel Oaks (39), A. C. Bangs (44), P. S. Swenson (34), Peter Johnson (41), and J. A. Hubbard (41) were elected."
added 4/15/15 Note: Robert Harrison was my great grandfather's guardian. (Golding)
John & Lydia had 14 children; 2 sons, Marcus & Joseph died in Vermont & an infant in Wauconda.
I had a photo of Lydia and her daughters, including my great grandma whom I loved dearly, which is missing for some years now.
Very hard to believe someone would take this photograph that belongs in a beautiful large frame now hanging empty in my home. I had purchased mats specifically cut and special light protecting glass for it.
The Pratt family owned a good deal of property in the township and operated a hotel in Wauconda. In different years, their sons operated the hotel.
The Pratt Hotel was on Main Street is now a restaurant. I have (or had, if that photo didn't disappear too) a photograph of the back side of this building with my great grandparents and my grandmother. I believe Justus Bangs may be sitting inside.
John A. Pratt was my 2nd great grandfather.
I believe their son, George W. Pratt, is buried in Wauconda, probably near his 3rd wife & without a headstone.
