OTTUMWA - Cliff E. Welker, 88, of 700 W. Alta Vista Ave. entered the presence of God at 8:25 am January 22, 2012 at Hospice House.

He was born November 27, 1923 in Grand Rapids, MI to Jean and Hazel M. Flood Welker. He married Connie Stewart May 5, 2007. He was raised in Muscatine, IA and served with the U.S.Navy during World War II, serving in the North Atlantic and the Mediterranean.

He joined Northwestern Bell March 3, 1947, starting as a lineman, then holding several jobs, becoming manager at Estherville. He subsequently became manager at Storm Lake, Fort Madison, and coming to Ottumwa in 1965. He retired in 1982.

He was a member of Albia Road Baptist Church, Past President of the Ottumwa Regional Health Center Board of Directors, had served on the board of directors for Ottumwa Area Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Ambassadors Club, Ottumwa Rotary Club, Telephone Company Pioneers, O.B.Nelson Post #3 American Legion and a life member of Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars. He also had been a volunteer for Hospice of Wapello and Davis Counties.

Surviving is his wife, Connie; a son, Scott(Cathy)Welker of Alpena, MI; a grandson, Keith Welker; two step-daughters, Alicia(Neal)Abbott and Tammy(Jon)Proenneke of Ottumwa; a step-son, Terry(Joni)Stewart of Abingdon, IL; 6 step grandchildren, Mallory(Ryan)Nyman, Bradley Stewart, Jeffrey(Hannah)Abbott, Jennifer Abbott, Jonathan(Patti)Proenneke and Joseph Proenneke; a brother, Robert(Shirley)Welker of Muscatine; along with several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Darwin and a sister, Vivian.

Funeral services will be 10 am Wednesday at Albia Road Baptist Church with Pastor Jeremy Skinner officiating. Military services will be conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B.Nelson Post #3 American Legion. Cremation will follow the services. Inurnment will be in Ottumwa Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will begin after 1 pm Tuesday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 6-8 pm Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Albia Road Baptist Church or to Hospice of wapello and Davis Counties Ottumwa, IA.
