Obituary from The Daily Herald (Provo, UT) - Thursday, August 7, 1924:
Annie Maria Gibbs Smith, widow of Hyrum Fisher Smith and mother of Presiding Patriarch Hyrum G. Smith, died at noon Wednesday of internal cancer. Mrs. Smith has suffered for a long time and was at the home of her daughter, Mrs. H. G. Billing, Salt Lake, at the time of her death. All of her children except two were at the bedside.
Funeral services will be held in the Provo sixth ward chapel under the direction of Bishop Joseph Nelson, Friday at 1:30 p.m. Interment will take place in the Provo City Cemetery.
Mrs. Smith was born November 7, 1862, the daughter of John Gibbs of Herefordshire, England and Mary Catherine Langton of Lancashire, England.
Her parents were hand cart pioneers and came to Utah in 1852. Mr. Gibbs built the first house in the old Brigham City fort and the first 2 room adobe house in Brigham City which was later used as a meeting house.
Mrs. Smith has been an active worker in the church all her life and has held offices in the Relief Society in Provo where her home is.
Surviving Mrs. Smith are her children, Patriarch Hyrum G. Smith of Salt Lake; John G. Smith, desk sergeant Salt Lake police, Evelyn Smith Haws, Ralph G. Smith, display manager Taylor Bros, and Mrs. H.C. Billing of Salt Lake, also three brothers, John Gibbs of Grace, Idaho, Jonathan Gibbs, Portland, Oregon, and Seth Gibbs, Swan Lake, Idaho.
