He finished school and became a farmer. His farm adjoined his brother's Whittier Beard and their houses were about a 1/4 of a mile apart. He married Miriam Hunnicutt Nov 1, 1900 and they had 12 children, losing one in childhood. He was a workaholic and enjoyed music, nature and he wrote poetry. He maintained a dairy herd as did his brother Whittier. One of his hobbies was raising evergreen trees for windbreaks. He wrote to shutins and found out their needs and with a business man's money bought wheel chairs, braces, etc. for the less fortunate. He died April 19, 1952, two years after celebrating his Golden Wedding anniversary. He was bedridden most of that time.
