Emma was the 9th child born to Dr Andrew and Susan Hunter.

Emma was born at Canyon Ferry while her parents ran "Canyon Ferry House" at the Canyon Ferry crossing on the Missouri River crossing for Confederate Gulch and Diamond City. The family moved to Bozeman in the spring of 1870 when her dad took a contract for Gallatin County Doctor and Agency doctor at Ft Ellis. He was also appointed Justice of the Peace. He took "squaters rights" on an area with hot springs and began to build "Hunters Hot Springs". Emma was killed on one of those trips when the wagon she was riding in turned over. She was killed and her sister Sallie hurt.
