IRVINE - John Paul Tuttle Sr, 93, passed away on Jan 18, 2012 after a short illness. He was a native of Estill county, a son of the late John Newton Tuttle and the late Dora Cook Tuttle on November 18, 1918 and lived there all of his life. Mr. Tuttle joined the US Army the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor. During the service to his country, he lunched with President Franklin Roosevelt and Vice-President Harry Truman. Tuttle drove General Dwight D. Eisenhower and other generals to staff meetings. While en route to North Africa the ship that was carrying him sank, leaving him with a severe back injury. On May 1, 1949 he was contacted by KY Farm Bureau to be the first agent manager in Estill Co. At the time, there were 18 policy holders. Since that time it has grown to nearly 5,000. Mr. Tuttle has been quoted as saying "Serving the people of Estill Co. became more of a pleasure than work" While serving with Farm Bureau he won many trips including a trip to Spain and Hawaii. He was also selected as Agent of the Year many times. All clients, staff and directors have been greatly appreciated. After retiring with 55 years of service, he continued as a licensed agent until passing away. Mr. Tuttle also farmed most of his life raising black angus cattle and different crops. He was a member of the Crooked Creek Christian Church where he served as an elder for more than 50 years. He was preceded in death by two brothers Cecil and Charles Brown Tuttle; five sisters Bartha Fox, Allie Boian, Maggie Shifflet, Vina B. Rose and Hazel Reed. He is survived by his wife of 68 years Daisy Winkler Tuttle; two sons John Paul Tuttle (Hope) Jr, and Michael Anderson Tuttle; one granddaughter, one grandson, three step-grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren; a brother Marcus Glendon (Mickey) Tuttle. Funeral services will be held at the Crooked Creek Christian Church, Sat, 2pm. with Darrell Estes, Leo Crowe and John Isfort officiating. Burial will follow in the West Irvine Cemetery. Friends may call after 6pm Fri, and 8-11am Sat at Lewis Funeral Home. There will also be visitation from 12-2pm at Crooked Creek Christian. Pall bearers will be E.B. Stacy, Wesley Rose, Jerry Rose, Gene Arvin, Roy Gene Arvin, and Floyd Moreland. Honorary pallbearers will be Bunt Gross, Kenneth Rice, Larry Combs, Lynn Parsons Michael Woolery, Fred Tuttle Jr, Clyde Reed, Wilbur Shiflet, Billy Boian, Herald Harris, Troy Harris, Robert Smith, Kyle Christopher, Ricky Jenkins, Billy Coffey, J. Roy Fox, Jim Reed, Jamie Hamm, Scotty Hamm, Ray Harold Hardy, Scotty Winkler Jr, Donnie Arvin, Dwight Arvin, Ken Parkey, Phillip Worrell, Larry Phoenix, and Shirley Adams.
