It is said that John arrived in TX as early as 1819 and staked a claim on the El Camino Real in the eastern part of Ayish Bayou District. In 1825 he moved his wife and nine children to their home site near the Palo Gaucho where they became neighbors to he families of Philip A. Sublet and Elisha Roberts.
John Cartwright, an iron smith and carpenter by trade built a cotton gin and mill in 1825 and later established a merchandising business with his sons. In 1835 he served as Judge in the First Instance; enlisted in Capt. David Brown's Militia in the summer of 1836 and was a member of the Board of Trustees of the University of San Augustine in 1837.
On 10 March of 1841 John Cartwright died. His wife Polly died 10 June 1848, both are buried in their family cemetery. The children of John and Polly Cartwright were: MATTHEW (ma=Amanda Holman), ROBERT GRIMMER (ma=Mary Lanier), DICEY HOSKINS, GEORGE WASHINGTON (ma=Ann Oliver), MARY (ma=William Garrett), CLEMENTINE (ma=Sanford Holman), MARTHA E., JOHN CLINTON (ma=Elvira Holman), and RICHARD HANKINS (ma=Ann Berry).
