Melvin A. Bartels, 83, of Rich Township, died Feb. 15, 2001, at St. Francis Hospital and Health Centers in Blue Island. He was born Feb. 18, 1918, in Rich Township. He was a carpenter with Union Local 272 and was a veteran of World War II. Mr. Bartels is survived by his wife, Eileen Bartels; one daughter, Beverly (Bill) Martin of Palos Heights; four sons, Wayne (Margaret) Bartels of Frankfort, Orlynn Bartels of Monee, and Ralph Bartels and Jeffery (Dixie) Bartels, both of Peotone; and 10 grandchildren, Mark, Andy, Amy, Lauren, Eric, Shawn and Jessica Bartels, and Kevin and Julie Martin. The funeral was conducted Feb. 19 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Frankfort. Burial was in Skyline Memorial Park, Monee. Memorials may be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Building Fund, 295 Sauk Trail, Frankfort, IL 60423, or the American Cancer Society, South Cook Area Office, 6720 W. 167th St., Suite 3, Tinley Park, IL 60477. Arrangements were under the direction of Hirsch Funeral Homes, Tinley Park.
