WILLIAMSBURG - Myrtle Wheeler McRoy, 91, passed from this life on Tuesday morning, Sept. 16, 2008, at her home following a brief illness.
She was a lifetime resident of Williamsburg. She was born to Merit and Lillie Wheeler in 1917 in Asheville, N.C., and very soon thereafter the family moved to Williamsburg.
Myrtle and her siblings were raised on the "Old Ross Place" on Capital Landing Road. They spent many happy hours in the fields surrounding the farm, helping with chores, gardening and tending livestock. They walked back and forth to Matthew Whaley School and thoroughly enjoyed exploring Williamsburg and the surrounding area way before the restoration was even considered.

After graduating from school, Myrtle worked at Eastern State Hospital, Fort Eustis and the College of William and Mary. In 1940 she married Jessie Paul McRoy of Washington, N.C. She also operated McRoy's Guest Home on By-Pass Road for many years. The home was one of the first of its type in Williamsburg. After her retirement, Myrtle volunteered at the Williamsburg Library and also was very involved in the life of her church, Jamestown Presbyterian, where she sang in the choir, assisted in the church office and held various offices. She was also an active member of A.A.R.P. and her church circle. Myrtle visited shut-ins and volunteered in various organizations throughout the years until she courageously surrendered her driver's license on her 90th birthday.
A devout Christian, Myrtle served as a positive role model for her family members and friends. With dignity and grace, she quietly went about doing God's work with no desire for acknowledgment or praise. Myrtle enjoyed traveling with friends and family, her weekend cottage on Gwynn's Island, her vegetable and flower gardens and her pets.
She absolutely adored her grandson, Jamie.
Left to cherish her memory are her son, James M. McRoy (Bonnie); grandson, James B. McRoy, all of Suffolk, Va.; sisters, Trudy (Ray) Bowman of Newport News and Blanche (Harry) McKay of Jacksonville, Fla., as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Myrtle was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Jessie Paul McRoy; her son, Jessie Paul McRoy, Jr.; her brothers, Oscar and Alexander Wheeler; and her sisters, Lola Larson; Bonnie Holland; Hazel Hedgebeth; Alma Baum and Virginia Belvin.
Arrangements and Services will be conducted by Nelsen Funeral Home, and Jamestown Presbyterian Church.
The visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22, 2008, at the Nelsen Funeral Home 3785 Strawberry Plains Road, Williamsburg, Va. 757-565-1141;
The service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008, at the Jamestown Presbyterian Church, 3287 Ironbound Rd. Williamsburg, Va. 23188. 757-229-5445.
Following the Service, also at the church, there will be a brief Commemoration, followed by the Interment Service at the Cedar Grove Cemetery, S. Henry St. Williamsburg, Va., at the McRoy family plot.
EXPRESSIONS OF SYMPATHY....
In lieu of flowers donation to the Jamestown Presbyterian Church or American Cancer Society will be appreciated.
