J.W. Ross was born at Mountainburg, Ark., February 3, 1867; died at his home in Stilwell, March 30, 1939 following sudden heart attack. He was the son of Wesley and Sarah Ross. He was married to Mary Elizabeth Stevens May 28, 1893 at Wagoner, Indian Territory. To this union, six children were born, five of whom still survive: Mrs. Grieg Lewis, Watts, Okla., Mrs. Mack Bean, Stilwell, Mrs. Harold Smith, San Louis Obispo, Calif., George Ross, Stilwell, and Calvin Ross of Bahrein, Arabia. Besides his widow and children, he leaves a brother, Frank Ross of Keota, Okla.
Mr. Ross joined the Christian church at Pittsburg, Kansas in 1927, and has lived a profound Christian life since. He has been retired from employment with the K.C.S.R. about eight years. He was a very prominent man and was loved by all who knew him. Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon at the Christian church here with the Rev. F.R. Hall, pastor, officiating. Burial was in New Hope cemetery under direction of Roberts Funeral home.
