Martha Ann Hain was born at LaFollette (Lafayette), Indiana, July 29, 1855 and passed away at her home in Grand Island July 2, 1908 being 52 years, 11 months and 3 days old. August 23, 1874, she was united in marriage to J. W. Devore and to this union eleven children were born. Three, Johnny, Tommy and Hattie, preceded her to that heavenly home. Mrs. Devore has been a resident of Phillips and vicinity for over twenty years and was well and favorably known by a host of friends. She was a loving wife and mother and leaves to mourn her loss three daughters, one son and husband at home and Mrs. D. Lacy and Mrs. Manka at Grand Island and Mrs. H. Lacy and C. Devore at Phillips beside a large number of other relatives near Phillips, all of whom were present at the funeral which occurred Sunday at Grand Island. The remains were brought to the St. Joseph cemetery where a brief service conducted by Rev. Cople, the Baptist minister, was held. The floral offerings were many and beautiful. The funeral was one of the largest at the cemetery for years. The family has the sympathy of all in their sad loss. Mrs. J. W. Devore arose last Thursday morning and started the fire for breakfast and went out of the house. When she returned the fire was not going good and she took the kerosene can and poured on oil. As she did so the can exploded, enveloping her in flames. The family all slept on the second floor excepting Wm. Dixon who on that night occupied a room below. The door was ajar and he saw the accident. He immediately grabbed his bed clothing and threw them around Mrs. Devore, extinguishing the flames but not before she was fatally burned and died at 1:30 p.m. that day.
