Rev. Reuben William Courtney was close to the Chandler family, for his sister Isabella "Jane" Courtney married Georgie Chandler's brother Ransom Daniel Chandler. They had 5 children by 1865. Reuben William Courtney married Georgia Ann Chandler, widow to Stephen McKim about 1865. Georgia had a daughter named Jennett Josephine McKim with Stephen McKim, who died during the Civil War, burial unknown. Reuben loved Jennett as his own daughter.
Reuben and Georgie Courtney became the parents of eight children. Their son Sam, their second son, and third born, grew up in Polk County, Texas. Sam Courtney, 23, and Emerline McMillan, 15, were united in marriage January 5, 1893, according to Polk County Marriage Records, page 575.
