Ruth Bible Clendenon, 99, of Greeneville, passed away Friday morning at Laughlin Memorial Hospital.
She was a loving and caring mother, mother-in-law, sister and friend.
She was born in Mohawk the same day the Titanic sank almost 100 years ago on April 15, 1912.
In the 1930s, Mrs. Clendenon helped establish the Reformation Lutheran Church in Greeneville and was its oldest living member.
She was the widow of Bug Clendenon who died in 1953. Since then she was both mother and father to their son.
In the late 1920s, she was a nurse aide at Takoma Hospital, then worked for American Calendar Co., from which she retired after more than 40 years of service.
She also worked seasonally at Tennessee Supply Co. until she was 98 years old.
She was a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars .
She had a green thumb and enjoyed working in her flower garden and mowing her yard until recent illnesses prevented her from continuing these outdoor activities.
She was an avid football fan and enjoyed watching the games on TV, especially UT.
She is survived locally her son and daughter-in-law: William F. "Butch" and Angie Clendenon; and by a sister: Betty Legg of Jupiter, Fla.; and nieces and nephews: Cathi Buffer, Robert Banner, and Judi Mutters of Florida, Brenda Kniffen of South Carolina, Carroll and Leroy Bible of Knoxville, and Kenneth B. and Sam Bible of Texas.
She was the daughter of the late William Herman and Lula Love Bible and was preceded in death by three brothers: LeRoy B. Bible, William Herman "Sonny" Bible Jr., and McKinley Brown Bible; and three sisters: Ardell Bible, Inell B. Cox, and Mary B. "Pud" Bowers.
The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Monday at Doughty-Stevens Funeral Home.
Family and friends are asked to meet at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Andrew Johnson National Cemetery for a graveside service. Pastor Rick Ohsiek will officiate with music provided by Angela Willis.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cherokee Chapter Trout Unlimited, P.O. Box 712, Greeneville, TN 37744 or the charity of the donor's choice.
