Nellie B. Cory, Prominent Lodi Resident, Passes Away
LODI OFFICE STOCKTON RECORD, Sept 11 - Death this morning claimed one of Lodi district's most prominent and beloved women, Mrs. Nellie B. Cory, widow of the late John B. Cory. She died at 7 o'clock at her home, seven miles northeast of Lodi, one of the most beautiful country places in the county. She had been under a doctor's care for some time. Mrs. Cory was 74 years of age. She was born at Vacaville and was the daughter of L. W. Buck, one of the pioneer fruit growers of that district and a state senator. She was reared at Vacaville and completed her education at the College of the Pacific.
MARRIED AT VACAVILLE
She was married in Vacaville in 1884 to John B. Cory, who had begun his career as a fruit grower there shortly before that time. In 1837 the couple came to San Joaquin county and Cory and his brother-in-law, Frank Buck, bought 400 acres of the Senator B. F. Langford place, near Acampo, and planted the land to fruit trees, although most of the country was then grain fields. Later more land was purchased and the ranch was known as the Buck & Cory ranch. It was the first commercial orchard in Lodi district. The ranch was divided with the death of Buck in 1918. Cory, who died December 31, 1930, was the first president of the First National Bank of Lodi and was prominent in other civic and business developments of Lodi during his lifetime.
PROMINENT CLUBWOMAN
Mrs. Cory was a prominent clubwoman. She and her husband were charter members and served as first matron and patron of Woodbridge Chapter, Order Eastern Star. She was also a member of the Lodi Woman's Club and the Stockton Philomathean Club, having been active in both. The couple traveled extensively abroad and were patrons of the arts. Mrs. Cory was the aunt of Congressman Frank H. Buck. A sister, Mrs. Anna Ackerly of San Francisco, and a brother, Fred M. Buck of Davis, survive, and there are also two nieces, Miss Marion Ackerly of Lodi and Mrs. H. W. Rohrbacker of Stockton. The funeral service has been set for 2 p. m. Friday at the Hale & Bawden Chapel. Interment will be in Lodi Cemetery.
