A Leader In Lodi District

With the passing of John B. Cory, Northern San Joaquin loses one of its outstanding citizens, a man who pioneered as an orchardist and fruit shipper and was a leader in banking, building and business circles of Lodi. It was in large part due to the early experimental work in fruit growing on the part of Mr. Cory and his brother-in-law, Frank H. Buck, that the possibilities of the Lodi district became known, that land previously devoted to grain and melons was converted into one of the highly developed and diversified fruit producing sections of the state. A man in whom his fellow citizens reposed the utmost respect and confidence, he was looked to for leadership in many movements for the civic and financial betterment of his community. Helping to organize two of Lodi's banks, he was in succession honored with the presidency of both institutions. As a member of investment and improvement companies he had a part in the building of Hotel Lodi, The Lodi Theater building and modern business blocks of the city. Mr. Cory lived a full life. He maintained many contracts with his fellow men through fraternal, club and social activities. His country place, with its ideal appointments and surroundings, was the scene of a happy home life and charming hospitality. With Mrs. Cory he had traveled extensively. While devoted to his own section, he had the breadth and culture of one who is at home in the world's far place. Mr. Cory's life was rich in the living as well as in accomplishment.
