Inscription was recorded in the book Owego. Some account of the early settlement of the village in Tioga County, N.Y., called Ah-wa-ga by the Indians, which name was corrupted by gradual evolution into Owago, Owego, Owegy and finally Owego, 1907.

David, the second son and third of five children of David Pixley and Mary Abigail Cooper was born on 27 May 1741 at Stockbridge, Massachusetts. David served in the American Revolutionary War in the Massachusetts Militia, first as Lieutenant, then Captain, then promoted to Colonel at the close of the Revolutionary War. David was married twice. He married 1) Lois Whittlesey, the daughter of Jabez and Sarah (Stoddard) Whittlesey on on 8 December 1762/3 at Stockbridge, Berkshire, Massachusetts by Rev. Stephen West. They had at least three children born at Stockbridge:
1. Elijah Pixley (b. 1763; d. 1822), m. 4 Jun 1791 at Washington, OH, Thamer Clarissa Sherwood (1773-1804)
2. David Pixley Jr. (b. 1764; d. 1799), m. say 1788, Druscilla Bond (1765-1822)
3. Daughter Pixley (b. say 1765; d. say 1773, Stockbridge, MA), accidentally shot by her brother when she was eight years old.
Lois (Whittlesey) Pixley died say 1770 at Stockbridge, Massachusetts.
David, a widower, married 2) Lydia Patterson, the daughter of Joseph Emmett and Lydia (Marean; should be Mareau) Patterson say 1774 at Stockbridge, Berkshire, Massachusetts. They had two children born at Stockbridge:
1. Amos Pixley (b. 1775; d. 1807), m. 1795 at Owego, NY, Betsey Wood (1780-)
2. Mary Ann Pixley (b. 11 May 1777; d. 4 Jun 1848, Owego, NY), m. 1) Dr. Samuel Tinkham (1769-1804); m. 2) on 7 Apr 1805 at Owego, NY, James Pumpelly (1775-1845)
David Pixley was one of the commissioners to buy the "Boston Purchase" or "Boston Ten Townships" containing about 230,000 acres and constituting a large portion of Broome and Tioga Counties in New York State. He owned and managed about 3,000 acres of the above named purchase just west of Owego, being named as one of the first settlers of Owego in 1790. Colonel David Pixley died on 25 August 1807 in his 66th year at Owego, and is buried in the Presbyterian Church Burying Ground at Owego, Tioga, New York.

In memory of Col. David Pixley, who departed this life Aug. 25, 1807, in the 67th year of his age. He was an officer of the Revolution at the siege of Quebec under Gen. Montgomery. He was the first settler of Owego in 1790 and continued its father and friend until his death.
