Dena Vedders married Gerrit Likkel and moved onto his claim in 1885 when she was 15 years old. Gerrit had a house and oxen, and working together, proved up the claim.
We are told many hardships they endured. For fuel they burned prarie grass which they twisted into tight rolls so they would burn longer. The first four children were born here.

In the spring of 1898 the Likkels bought a farm 7 miles north west of New Holland (South Dakota). The first child born here was Rikki (10/1898)then followed:

Her husband Gerrit died on the family farm in New Holland in 1931.
Dena moved to Lynden Washington to be near her family in 1944.
