Gerrit Likkel (Sr.) was born in Diffelen, mun. Ambt Hardenberg, prov. Overijssel, Netherlands. Diffelen is a neighborhoodship on the westbank of the river Vecht, app. 5 mile east of the city Ommen and app. 4 mile southwest of the city Hardenberg, in the northeastern part of the province Overijssel, about 6 mile west of Germany.
Gerrit Likkel immigrated to America in 1881 from Ommen, Netherlands on the steamship Pollux.

Arriving in Iowa Gerrit worked in Lemars near Sioux Center Iowa,for several years to earn enough money so he could send for his sister and their parents(William Hendrik Likkel and Jennigjen Kosters).

Gerrit with his father Willem, homesteaded in South Dakota,near New Holland on section 16.

Gerrit married Dena Vedders August 31, 1885.
They were blessed with 13 children, one child died in infancy.
In the spring of 1898 the Gerrit Likkels bought a farm 7 miles north west of New Holland (South Dakota). The first child born here was Rikki (Hendrika)(10/1898)
Gerrit Sr. died on the farm in 1931, His wife Dena remained on the farm for few years and move d into town(New Holland).Eventually Dena followed her family to Lynden, Washington, were she lived until her death in 1957.
