Our husband, brother, uncle and friend, Gerald David Akin, 86, went home to be with our Lord Monday, March 14, 2011. Gerald was the son of David and Kathrine Akin, of Lark. He served in the Navy aboard the flagship Izzard on the Pacific during World War II. He attended Oklahoma Baptist University, majoring in Business Administration. He had a long and successful business career in Shawnee. He was employed with Perry-McGee Furniture, then at Marquis Furniture, later becoming a business owner of Gerald's Home Accents. He was an active member of the Kiwanis. His church home was the Central Church of Christ, of Shawnee.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Vashti; son, Gary David; three brothers; and five sisters.
In 2008, he was joined in marriage with Bertha Combs. He enjoyed three years of bliss and joy before leaving this life. He is survived by his wife, Bertha; sister, Marjorie Hewitt, of Lebanon; brother, Wayne Akin, of Del City; and numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, two stepchildren, six step-grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Gerald recently discovered the joy of being called 'PawPaw' by step-grandson, Carson Childers. Services will be at 2 p.m., Friday, March 18, at Walker Funeral Chapel.
