Caroline was the daughter of Charles Marcel and Caroline Richard Homassel, and the niece of Joseph Gallego, co-owner of the Gallego Flour Mill of Richmond. As a teenager, she survived the 1811 Theater Fire.

She married Dr. Philip Thornton of Rappahannock County, Va., who had rescued her from the fire, and lived there in his family mansion, "Montpelier". They had three children.
