Dr. Philip Thornton was a son of Col. William Thornton and Martha Alexander Stuart.

Philip married first Ellen Bankhead who died shortly after they were married.
Philip married second Caroline Homassel on April 23, 1812, in Richmond, VA.

Col. William Thornton died and left "Montpelier" to his three youngest sons--Philip Thornton, Howard F. Thornton, and Stuart Gibbons Thornton.

Dr. Philip is said to have willed the "Montpelier" estate to his wife Caroline.

Dr. Philip Thornton served in the Virginia House of Delegates in 1832-1834.
