Hiram T. Saxton

Hiram T. Saxton, ninety years old, since 1905 an exteemed resident of Mt. Vision, died at his home Thursday evening of last week at 6:40 o'clock. He had been in feeble health throughout the winter, but the end came suddenly and calmly.

Hiram T. Saxton was born at Westville May 31, 1843, being the last to survive of the four children of John and Asenath (Bates) Saxton. He spent his boyhood there but later moved with his parents to Unionville, O., returning to New York state in 1872 to marry Henrietta Reynolds whom he took back to Ohio. They resided there until after the death of their daughter, Nannie, the health of Mrs. Saxton was imperiled and they moved to Virginia, where they resided for eleven years.

There Mr. Saxton engage in farming and both he and his wife made many friends. He was active in farmer organizations and church circles, assisting in the founding of three churches.

Later he was called back to Ohio following the death of his father, but in 1905 returned to New York state, locating at Mt. Vision to spend his remaining days. His first wife died in 1912 and later he married Mrs. Hannah Kenyon to whom he was deeply devoted. However, she lived but a few years.

Mr. Saxton was a loyal member of the Mt. Vision Baptist chuch which he joined by letter in 1906, serving for many years as deacon and when his health failed being elected honorary deacon. He was also trustee of the church for two years, resigning in January 1924, because of his health.

Mr. Saxton was widely traveled and keenly enjoyed his trips, visiting California for the last time when eighty years of age and somewhat handicapped physically. He was weel read, enjoying the finest literature, and his counsel was sought and respected by his neighbors. For several years he served as Justice of the peace at Mt. Vision.

Surviving are an adopted daughter, Mrs. Carl Arnold of Delhi, who was taken into the family after the death of his daughter and held in the highest affection; two grandchildren, Marguerite and Carl Arnold of Delhi; and several nephews and one niece, among them being LaVerne Saxton of Fort Plain, William Saxton of Cleveland, O., and Mrs. Grave Saxton Adams of East Orange, N.J. To them the sympathy of wide circles of friends will be extended.

Funeral services were held at the Mt. Vision Baptist church Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, the Rev. C.J. Hurlbutt, past of that church, officiating. The body was placed in the vault for interment in the family plot this spring.
