SALISBURY - Martha Ellen Miller, 98, died Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009, at Carillon Nursing Home.

Born Sept. 25, 1911, in Rowan County, she was the daughter of the late Mary Caroline Barringer Miller and George Luther Miller.

Educated in Rowan County schools, she graduated from Catawba College in 1933 with a double Major in Biology and History, then went to UNC Greensboro and received her masters in Education.

In Rowan County she taught at Granite Quarry High, East Spencer High School; then a Guidance Counselor at China Grove and Landis Elementary Schools. She returned to teaching at South Rowan High School where she retired in 1973.

She spent summers in Conn. during WWII building airplane engines. She was a lifelong and oldest member at Franklin Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Jack Barringer Miller, Luther Reid Miller and George Elder Miller; two sisters, Frances Miller Ward and Carolyn Miller Blount.

Survivors include nieces and nephews, Steve Blount (Melanie) of Spencer, Lynn Blount Berry (Michael) of Lewisville, Terry Miller (Maxine) of Charlotte, Dorothy Miller Sabella (Ralph) of Calif., Harry Ward of Salisbury; many great nieces and nephews; and family friend, Novella Bell.

Service and Burial: 2 p.m. Wednesday at Summersett Memorial Chapel with Dr. Larry E. Summey to officiate. Burial will follow at Chestnut Hill Cemetery.
