Jake was only 8 years old when his father died and he became "head of the family." He worked in the fields along with other family members. That is how they kept the food on the table. It was very hard, hot work in the fields. After his mother died he joined the 1st Army in World War II serving under General Bradley.
Jake learned magic tricks and would entertain his siblings. Every Saturday night he would get ready for the Saturday night dance. His brothers all learned to play music, he was the dancer. He became Godfather to sister Marie's son Jack (named John Jacob after him), sister Erma's daughter Rosie, and sister Loretta's son Rudy.
Jake married Rita Flores on Sep 5 1946 in Hollister, They celebrated their 50th anniversary in 1996 in Madera with many friends and family from near and far while the mariachi band played.
Jake was a step-father to Lawrence Hernandez, son of Rita from a previous marriage. Lawrence often said "Jake treated me as if I was his real son."
Two things that could always be said of Jake "he was a great dancer and he was a stylish dresser"
Brothers and Sisters:
Marie Cantua Moreno, Edward Cantua, Loretta Cantua Sandoval, Charles Cantua, Primitivo Cantua, Archie, Fernando, Joe Moreno and Erma Moreno Dehn
