He was born in Pittston on Dec. 26, 1850, son of Warren R. and Laura J. (Carleton) Lewis. When a boy he attended the public schools of Gardiner, graduating from the Gardiner High school in 1868. He attended Bowdoin College and graduated from that institution with the class of 1872. After graduation he became the principal of the Gardiner High School and served in this capacity until 1875, when he became interested in the banking business. He served as treasurer of the Gardiner Savings Institute for Savings and later became president of the Maine Trust & Banking Co., in which capacity he served at the time of his death.
Mr. Lewis married Oct. 18, 1876, Miss Eleanor W. Partridge of this city, who, with three children, Henry of Portland, Me.; Carl of Portland, Ore. and Miss Eleanor Lewis of this city, survive. Of later years the family have passed their winters in Portland and their summers at their pleasant estate in this city "The Cove."
Deceased, outside of his banking interests in thsi city was connected with many other large business enterprises. he was a director and one the largest stockholders in the Maine Central Railroad and a director in the Union Mutual Life Insurance Co., of Portland.
Mr. Lewis was deeply interested in civil affairs and could always be depended upon to give hearty support to any affair pertaining to the best interests of the city. He served on the common council from Ward 3 in 1885 and on the board of alderman from 1886 to '88 inclusive, being the president of that body during the two first years. During Gov. Plaisted's administration in 1911-2 he was a member of the Governor's Council. Mr. Lewis gave freely of his time and the many facilities at his disposal during both Liberty loan campaigns and served as a member of the exemption board in Kennebec County District No. 1, until compelled by ill health to relenquish the duties. In 1901, Mrs. Lewis was honored by an appointment as trustee of Bowdoin college serving in this capacity until 1911, when he was appointed above trustee. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 3 p.m. from his late home. The family requests no flowers be sent.
